The Problem with Android Updates & the Solution that isn’t
Google will be rolling out Android Q shortly which will start the eternal question for most Android users: When will my device get the update? The problem with Android updates is known to everyone & there isn’t much that one can do about it except hope that Google & OEMs raise their game to ensure timely updates to all. However, what bemuses me is when I hear someone shifting from Android to iOS only in the lure of faster updates.
Don’t get me wrong. Apple is indeed a million times better than Google in rolling out updates, notwithstanding the fact that it is comparatively easier for Apple to do so considering they control both the hardware & the software. However, one of the primary reasons many people prefer Android is the lack of restrictions found in iOS. Any number of updates that iOS gets, would not make it more open or less limiting than it current is. It would be no exaggeration to say that even Android Oreo would be less restrictive than iOS 12.
Getting speedy updates feels nice & I shall dream of a day Android ecosystem gets faster updates. But I simply fail to see logic in shifting to iOS for the sole reason of lack of updates on Android. If you ever hear anyone doing so, then he probably never cared about the openness of Android over iOS in the first place and he would probably be happier in the world of Apple.
